Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom state has announced the appointment of Paul Bassey as new chairman of the board and management of Akwa United football club. This was contained in a statement signed by Aniekan Umanah, the state commissioner for Information and Communications, and made available to The Nation. Udom on Tuesday, March 1, also dissolved the interim board and management of the Uyo-based team. Bassey’s appointment, according to the statement, takes immediate effect and would last for three months. Akwa United, one of Nigeria’s representatives in the CAF Confederation Cup, on Saturday, February 27, in Uyo crashed out of the competition after losing on penalty shootout.  A veteran journalist Paul Bassey has been appointed as the president of premier league club side Akwa utd after the team crashed of CAF confederation cup  The hosts crashed out of the competition after losing 5-6 in a penalty shootout in the return leg match against Vita Club de Mokanda of Congo. Akwa United, who had a 1-0 first leg advantage, however lost the return leg by the same scoreline after regulation time. Paul Bassey, a CAF instructor and a member of NFF Technical Committee, had said after the game that he was highly disappointed with the performance of Akwa United. Bassey said Akwa United was a scapegoat to all the Nigerian clubs playing on the continent this season. “It is most unfortunate that they have to crash out of the competition this way,’’ he said. Before his appointment, Bassey was Akwa United’s media consultant. Paul Bassey, was in November 2015, designated by football’s world governing body, FIFA, as match commissioner for the 2018 World Cup qualifying cracker between the Red Devils of Congo and Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia in Brazzaville. Bassey is a veteran Sports journalist that grew through the ranks. Today, he is perhaps the most powerful football journalist in Nigeria.
